Understanding Ankle Structures and How They Affect Shoe Fit

When it comes to finding the perfect pair of shoes, most people with wide feet focus on the forefoot—considering factors like bunions, toe thickness, ball girth, and instep girth. However, one of the most overlooked aspects of a great fit is ankle structure. If you’ve ever experienced heels slipping off, a loose back, or ankles slipping out from shoes, the issue might not be the shoe length—it could be an ankle structure fit issue.

Why Is a Good Grip Important?

A proper grip in your shoes is essential for comfort, stability, and style—especially in heels and ballerina flats. This is even more critical in low-cut styles, which offer a sleek, elongated look but require a perfect fit to prevent slippage. On the other hand, shoes with higher vamps or Mary-Jane straps provide a more secure hold but don’t deliver the same refined aesthetic as low-cut designs. If your shoes aren’t gripping your feet well, you may experience discomfort, instability, and an awkward walking experience.

The Three Main Ankle Structures

Different ankle types require different custom adjustments to ensure a secure fit:

1. Straight Ankles

  • Generally, people with straight ankles have minimal issues with fit.
  • How to check? Such ankles generally naturally hold onto shoes without much gapping or slipping.
  • Custom adjustment needed: Adjustments may not be needed.

2. Slim Ankles

  • Characterised by having less flesh on either side of the ankle bone.
  • How to check? If you see gaps on the sides of the heel area, you likely have slim ankles.
  • Custom adjustment needed: Padding on either side of the ankle bone to fill those gaps for a snug fit.

3. Curved Ankles

  • The top part of the ankle curves inward, creating an uneven fit at the back.
  • How to check? The bottom of your heel touches the back counter, but the top of the shoe has a visible gap.
  • Custom adjustment needed: Plugging the gap at the top without adding thickness at the bottom, ensuring a balanced and comfortable fit.

Combination Ankle Structures

Some people have a mix of structures, such as straight & slim or curved & slim, and it’s common for each foot to have a slightly different shape. This is why custom adjustments are key to achieving the best possible fit.
